‘Looking for Alice’ is an invitation to a visual journey to Wonderland. This series of images attempts to capture and symbolize our eternal quest for a ‘Better’ (whether in its emotiona lpsychological, or geographical form), concentrating on the journey rather than its final destination.

Alice is in wonderland and we are looking for Alice. In order to do so, we, ourselves, have to enter the forest, follow the paths, take the wrong turns, see the hidden signs, let ourselves be both scared and amazed, allow ourselves to lose control just enough to enjoy the ride. By looking for Alice, we are ultimately trying to experience the world again, as if it was for the first time; to get back in touch with a form of innocence we once had, as children.

If the theme ‘Alice in Wonderland’ comes an obvious, yet perfect metaphor, to illustrate the idea of the quest, a strong reference is also made to childhood tales in general. For childhood tales are constructed in such a way that they symbolize rites of passage. And if the happy ending always prevails, the path leading there is paved with painful and sometimes violent encounters, which need to be overcome in order to move on.

By superimposing my photographs, I create imaginary worlds. The superimposed images create a 3D like visual, with details to explore, worlds to discover, one after another, layer after layer. Worlds when one can dive in and get lost. Worlds where one can fell at once the fear of the unknown, the doubts of being faced with oneself, of being alone, the happiness of overcoming those doubts, and the excitement of the discovery. And sometimes, hidden in a corner, Alice’s face, guiding us.
